Abbie is an Associate specialising in patent drafting and prosecution for life sciences, healthcare and biotechnology innovations. She is a member of the firm’s pharma & biotech, higher education, and food & drink sector groups, and advises clients across a broad range of technologies, including diagnostics, molecular biology, genetics, formulations, medical devices, alternative proteins, plant-based technologies and plant variety rights. Abbie supports early-stage discovery platforms through to product-focused patent portfolios, with a focus on helping clients secure commercially relevant protection for complex inventions.
Abbie works with universities, spin-outs, SMEs and innovation-led businesses, supporting the development of patent protection that reflects both the underlying science and the client’s commercial objectives. She prepares and prosecutes patent applications before the UK and European patent offices and works closely with clients to translate complex scientific developments into commercially meaningful IP protection.
Education & background
Abbie holds a first-class degree and PhD from the University of Leicester. During her PhD, she developed techniques for the identification and characterisation of clinical isolates, drawing on expertise in aerobiology, microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. Her postdoctoral research focused on tracking and identifying mutations in liquid biopsies from melanoma using advanced molecular techniques. Abbie’s technical expertise includes qPCR, RT-PCR, flow cytometry, ELISA, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, DNA barcoding and sequencing, droplet digital PCR, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry and electron microscopy.
On a personal note…
Outside work, Abbie is kept busy by her three young children and enjoys making the most of time outdoors with her family. She is a keen runner and enjoys photography, particularly capturing candid family moments.
