Chris has worked on patent applications in a variety of technical fields, including circuit design, control systems, fibre optic sensors, antenna systems, liquid crystal and OLED display devices, and battery technology. He also has experience in prosecuting computer-implemented inventions before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). Chris has represented clients at hearings before the Examining Division and the Opposition Division of the EPO, as well as the Board of Appeal.
Education & background
Chris graduated from the University of Bristol with an MSci in Chemical Physics. This was followed by a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. His PhD focussed on growth and characterisation of a new semiconductor material with potential applications in infrared optoelectronics, particularly solar cells. This involved fabrication of epitaxial layer structures into working devices. During his PhD he worked on several papers, which were published in peer-reviewed journals.
Chris began his patent career in 2014, and joined Withers & Rogers in 2021. Chris holds a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary, University of London. In March 2023, he was registered as a representative before the new Unified Patent Court, one of the first European patent attorneys to be entered on the list of UPC representatives.
On a personal note…
One of Chris’ main interests is music, and in his spare time he enjoys playing the guitar and attending concerts around London. He has an interest in Chinese culture and is learning Mandarin.
