The issue of shale gas and the hydraulic
fracturing (fracking) techniques used to extract
it have caused significant controversy in recent
years. Despite this, and other factors such
as recent oil price falls and the discovery of
potentially significant onshore oil reserves near
Gatwick, the UK Government’s intentions are
clear: shale gas is considered a necessary part
of the UK’s future energy mix, but the industry
is going to have to find the innovative technical
means and methods required to extract it
safely and cleanly.
